Chapter 12

“What should I expect from this visit?” My gut was full of squirming worms.

I couldn’t tell if I wanted to rush home and sit on the toilet until it passed or take an antacid. I was intimately familiar with doubt, trying to get the better of me. Usually, I was able to talk myself through the reasons I was nervous and find evidence to prove why they were nonsense. This time I had no idea what I was about to face, which left me unsettled.

Tsekani glanced around the property. We were in a remote area at the edge of town and parked in front of a massive white house with a wrap-around porch. “Don’t stare the alpha down. Make eye contact to acknowledge him, then avert your gaze. You can look back at him, but it will be seen as a challenge if you hold his gaze. We won’t be here long enough to worry about the rest.”

People prowled out of the surrounding woods, and my heart started hammering in my chest. Tsekani grabbed my arm and dragged me toward the front door, ignoring the growls coming from the darkness surrounding us. With my luck lately, they’d attack us without provocation.

As if this day hadn’t been long enough. Why had I decided we needed to deal with the rogue shifter sooner rather than later? I was exhausted. Creating the Hellmouth had taken more out of me than I anticipated.

I felt the physical drain of my energy with every heartbeat. And Layla was still recovering, so Tsekani had to accompany me to the meeting. He was a great friend and asset to our group, but Layla was usually the one to join me on my excursions.

Tsekani lifted his fist and rapped on the door. His knuckles hit the wood surrounding the gorgeous stained-glass window making up the top half of the panel. My heart mimicked the hard tapping. It skipped a beat when a shadow appeared behind the glass.

The door was opened by a stunning woman in her early thirties wearing skin-tight jeans and a t-shirt. Her long blonde hair was pulled into a ponytail. “What can I do for you?” She narrowed serious, brown eyes on us and pursed her lips.

I lifted a hand and let it fall. “I’m Phoebe Duedonne, the new Pleiades, and I’d like to speak to the alpha. We have an issue with a shifter we’d like to discuss.”

If my identity or request surprised her, she showed no sign of it. After a silent second, she stepped aside and gestured for us to enter with a flourish of her hand. “He’s inside.”

Tsekani went in before me, his energy brushing against my shoulder as he passed. I practically stomped on his heels as I followed behind him. There was a wall behind the door, so I was surprised when we turned down a short hall, and the house opened up to an open floor plan.

The energy of those in the room hit me before the sound and layout registered.
